Furnishing and decorating your home can be an expensive process, especially when you want it to be done properly. But having a special and unique home doesn’t need to cost a lot of money and with a few savvy moves, you can have the personalized home that you have always wanted.

Five tips to make unique home

Clutter

One of the best pieces of advice when it comes to simple things you can do to your personal space at home to make it look superb – is to get rid of the clutter. A cluttered home is an extension of a cluttered mind and when you come home from a long day at the office, your safe haven and place of refuge becomes an anxiety riddled nightmare as you try and find a place to sit with a quiet cup of tea

Be absolutely ruthless when it comes to getting rid of the clutter in your home. Be very clear that there are personal items of sentimental value and then there is junk. Saving every stub from bus rides or concerts and mementoes starts to become a border line hoarding obsession, just waiting to happen.

If you are unable to throw anything away, get a friend or a family member to come and help you, otherwise you will just keep living in a mess and disorder.

Themes

If you have a number of color themes running through your home it’s now time to sort them. You are hardly going to create the unique style look that represents you with 5 or 6 vases in different colors vying for space on the mantelpiece. Your home is going to start resembling more of a yard sale.

Chuck out the trinkets and junk that really don’t deserve a place in your home – donate them to the local thrift store or charity, so that they can sell the items that you no longer use or want.

You can pack away the other items and every few months or so, rotate the color schemes giving your home a fresh look each time, packing away the display items and trinkets that don’t fit in. This way you will create more of an impact an abode that is a tribute to the unique person that you are, rather than showing the world that you live in a mess.

Also on the subject of themes you could adopt a particular theme and carry it through the whole house. You might choose an elegant Victorian townhouse theme or a 1930’s art deco theme. Some of the most unique looks can be created by going retro. How about a 1950’s American diner for your kitchen, or a 1980’s yuppy pad for your family room? A bedroom in shabby chic French Provencal style makes a certain statement. Scour the local flea markets, yard sales and thrift shops for bargains but also, remember many retailers and designers have new items in with a retro or vintage theme.

Eye catching furniture

When it comes to large pieces of unique home  furniture, you don’t want to have a total mix match of collections that you have made along the way. Instead, pick one unusual piece for each room and let that be the focal point. If you have a rather dramatic old red chair, don’t let it compete for space between your red couch, lamp and rug, instead go neutral in the rest of the room and let the chair hold its own.

Finding the best piece of furniture doesn’t have to blow the budget either. If you can’t afford the high end designer ranges, then one of the simplest ways is to hit the antique markets and stalls to find a beloved old chair or unique piece of furniture that is dying for a new home and bit of TLC. Chances are the piece of furniture will come to life and remain a talking point for years to come. A much more exciting and heart-warming story than shopping online at one of the top retailers and having a hugely expensive couch delivered on the same day.

Find your Style

Not sure what kind of décor style would suit you? Just have a look inside your cupboard and check out all of your clothes and you will find the answers right in there. Got a lot of neutrals and pastels and natural colors? Your style is earthy, environmentally friendly, calm and balanced. Got a lot of patterns, colors and shapes? Your style could be art deco, retro or modern.

Got a lot of bright colors? You might like to incorporate the styles and ambience that are reminiscent with the beauty of countries like Morocco or Kenya. Got a combination of classic cut clothing and simple, modern clothing in your cupboard? You may like the minimalistic, modern look for your home. Lots of clean lines, modern shapes and polished finishes in chrome, polished ceramics and gleaming glass.

Unique Art

One of the biggest and boldest statements of personal style in a home is the artwork. You don’t have to max out the credit card at a gallery for a statement piece. Find a local artist and commission them to recreate your vision or visit end of semester shows at art/design colleges. Student works are always cheaper and you never know, you might well find yourself not only with a unique piece to decorate your home, but a work from a future artist star.

The biggest secret to making your home unique is that it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money nor does it have to take years to accomplish. Simple, easy, tasteful and all you – just the very best that it can be.
