Moving house is one of the most stressful experiences you will ever have, so it’s important to approach moving day in an organized way, otherwise it could quickly descend into madness.  Follow these easy ways to make stress-free moving and ensure that you arrive at your new home relaxed and happy.

Four ways for Stress-Free Moving

Organization is Key

It’s vital to be organized when it comes to moving house.  Whether you live in a one bedroom apartment or a four bedroom family home, you need to approach packing and moving with military precision.  Get the whole family (and friends) involved, and make sure you have everything to hand that you’ll need.  The following items are essential:

  • Packing tape
  • Bubble wrap
  • Newspaper
  • Large and small boxes
  • Marker pen(s)
  • Notepad
  • Scissors

Organize your packing on a room by room basis and make sure to wrap delicate and breakable items in bubble wrap or newspaper.  Ensure you mark the side of each box with its contents, so it’s easy to unpack at the other end.  Always create an emergency box, which will contain everything you’ll need for your first few hours or first night in your new home – for example, the kettle, coffee, toaster, toiletries and whatever else you think will be required.  This saves you from having to rush around unpacking everything as soon as you arrive.

Agree your Schedule

Make sure that the property agents know it’s your moving day, and double check dates and times with your removal company the day before – it’s easy for dates to get confused and you don’t want to be left sitting around with all of your worldly possessions packed into boxes.  If you’re moving across the country, ensure that you get an estimated arrival time from your removal company – this way you can plan for rest stops on your journey and won’t arrive at your new home hours before your belongings do.  It’s important to agree a rough arrival time to make sure that the removal company don’t stop off for too many breaks en-route; every couple of hours is plenty!

Make the Most of your Removal Firm

Your removal company is there to help you, so make sure they move boxes into the appropriate rooms – if they’re labeled properly then this should be an easy task, or you can simply direct them to where you want specific boxes to go.  This means that you won’t have any heavy lifting to do yourself later.

Keep the Kids Happy

For stress-free moving with kids in tow, it’s important to pack a bag with everything they’ll need for the day – from baby supplies to snacks and lunches, and even games to amuse them if you’re heading out on a long journey to your new home.  There is nothing worse than having to sort through boxes to find diapers, bottles or toys when you’re trying to unpack in a logical and organized way.  Make a list of everything the kids will need for the day and make sure everyone gets plenty of sleep the night before.
