How to Take Care of Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl Floor

Vinyl is a great flooring option to have in your home. Many homeowners prefer this covering as it is easy on the pocket without sacrificing beauty and durability.

To keep it aesthetically pleasing and functioning throughout the years, periodical maintenance procedures can be an essential.

Consider the following tips to ensure vinyl flooring is shiny and in top notch condition:

  • Remove liquid spills immediately – Vinyl is considered as a waterproof covering, but it doesn’t mean you should let liquid spills dry. As much as possible, you should remove and clean the stains to avoid damaging the vinyl. Use a dry mop or cloth to clean the affected area.
  • Mild detergent – Another trick to keep your vinyl damage-free is by using mild detergent. Harsh and abrasive cleaning products can strip away the colour of your flooring, leaving it dull and boring. If you don’t have any extra cash to spare, you can make your own cleaner. To create your very own homemade cleaner, simply combine 1 cup of water with ¼ cup of baking soda in a bottle spray.

  • Do not scrub – Scouring can result in scratches, possibly yielding to holes and patches. With that in mind, gently remove the dirt and grime with the help of a wet sponge. If the stain still remains, you can use a brush with soft bristles. If you let the water stay for several minutes it can get to the seams and edges, loosening the vinyl from its glue. With that in mind, always have a dry mop apart from the wet cleaner.
  • Sweep or vacuum – Before using a wet mop, it is important to remove dust and other tiny particles. This will prevent dirt and other possible small pieces, such as tiny rocks, from scratching the surface of the vinyl. Place a doormat outside the door to prevent dirt from reaching your vinyl flooring. Do not use rubber-backed rugs as it can discolor the vinyl in the long run.
  • Polish – One disadvantage of vinyl is discoloration after a period of time. To prevent this, polish the flooring once the colour starts to become dull. If you don’t want to go through the hassle of polishing, make sure you frequently mop.
  • Follow recommendations – Floor manufacturers will give you advice on how to keep vinyl flooring looking fresh. Follow their recommendations as much as possible before trying out a new cleaning agent or cleaning method.
  • Carry furniture – When you are rearranging the furniture of your living room or any part of your home, be sure to carry it as the interaction of its legs and the flooring can lead to scratches. You can also put padded tabs underneath the legs for convenience.

If you prefer vinyl flooring over other options such as carpet and marble coverings, proper maintenance and cleaning can be essential. Through these tips you can have a perfect shape flooring even when it receives regular abuse.
